Party Dress vs Party Romper

On Friday night I went dancing. It is an event that had been on my calendar for over a month and I spent that entire month talking to everyone who would listen... accumulating and convincing a group.

The week of the event I narrowed down my outfit options to two:

The Party Dress
The Party Romper

At the time, my outfit was determined on the group that would come. It was a simple if/then situation.
If my crush came, then I would wear my party dress.
If my crush did not come, then I would wear my party romper.

A few days prior to Friday, I accepted that my crush would not be there and would wear the party romper. My romper had not seen the daylight since my mother labeled it as atrocious. It was time.

Like most plans: they changed. As soon as Friday arrived, the decision came down to a vote.

One shoulder romper // Cinches at waist, one shoulder... wait for it.... with shoulder pad!

Black dress // Exposed back with bows.

Looks like my Mom won this round and she wasn't even around to vote.

I ended up pairing the outfit with minimal jewelry and flats. I love giving myself some extra height in heels but at the end of the day, I would much rather dance until close then care if my legs look a few inches longer. I'm short. I've accepted it.

I Wanna Dance With Somebody

I was sitting on my bed in a hostel in the middle of Paris when I learned that Michael Jackson had died. I received a text from sister and I thought it was a joke. Later that day, there was a psuedo parade of people dressed in his iconic looks blasting his music as they walked the Tuileries Garden.

I was sad. He was an icon and an influence into pop culture.

But when I learned Whitney Houston died, I was heartbroken.

Growing up my older sister loved Whitney Houston which of course meant that I did also.

It wasn't just her music... or The Bodyguard (amazing movie!)... or the fact that my sister thought she was cool... there was just something about Whitney.

But mostly, "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" was my anthem growing up and one of the biggest influencers into my love life.

I remember sneaking this song onto a church trip and listening to it on repeat.

I burned the words into my head.

I took every lyric to heart and I took it literally.

And now... in my late 20's, when I'm no longer just dreaming about dating and finding someone to dance with I still haven't let go of this song.

Instead:
I date.
Find ways to have my date dance.
Look for "the heat" like she croons.
And ask myself, "Is this a man who'll take a chance on a love that burns hot enough to last?"

My 10 year old self is proud. She can't figure out why I'm single.

Brunch at El Camino in Fremont

When Vik first asked Ashley to marry him, I don't think he realized I would be coming along with the package. He was relatively safe until I moved half a mile away.

Ashley was lucky to find an amazing man but I was just as lucky to gain such a brother. Vik puts up with a lot... but he has stepped into his big brother role like he was born for the job.

After spending most of this day with them, I couldn't help but go home and watch their wedding video again...

Which is why on Saturday I took on a 6'2 "Bro".

It was girls night. We started with dinner and drinks, drove back to my place for freshening up, then walked down the hill for a lively scene and more drinks.

I was set on perfecting my "Have you met Ted?" line. It's a simple wingman move... Tap on the shoulder of the guy standing next to you, ask him if he has met one of my beautiful friends and then turn around to continue my conversations with other friends.

Saturday night: 75% success rate... That is if you define success as meeting a guy at a bar.

Let's roll with it.

One of my girlfriends ended up connecting with a guy and they talked for nearly the entire time we were there. As we kept checking in on her, they were hitting it off... flirting, exchanging numbers, inching closer and closer together. But after an hour our friend came back upset... "he has a girlfriend."

Five minutes later he came over to apologize and ask for his coat back. She said she didn't have his jacket.

Bro: "I know you have it, I saw you leave with it."
Friend: "I don't have it."

Pitbull Little Noah steps in.

Me: "E, do you have his jacket?"
Friend: "No."
Bro: "I saw her pick it up."
Me: "She doesn't have your jacket."
Bro: "She took it."
Me: "As you can see, she isn't wearing a jacket and it's not in her hand."
Bro: "I want my jacket back."
Me: "It isn't here"
Bro: "I saw her."Me: "She says she doesn't have it so back off!"

Bro leaves. Bro's friend comes over heated. Demanding the jacket.

Me: "She didn't take his jacket!"

It was clearly time for us to go. These guys were only going to keep coming back and I, along with a few other girls, were over the scene.

All of the girls grabbed their jackets and purses.

But there was one left over.

In my lap.

His.

Oh, frak.

"We're leaving NOW."

Blind date

People love to set me up with their single gentlemen friends. I've narrowed it down to these reasons why:

1. I am a huge dork.
2. I am kind.
3. I love coming home to tell all of the stories from the night and laugh at myself.

I'm pretty sure it is mostly because of the third reason.

I was set up this week. Complete blind date status. Never met him. Never talked with him. I saw only one Facebook picture.

We met for drinks on Tuesday after work and immediately started covering the basics...

What do you do for a living?
How do you pronounce your name?
What do you prefer people call you?

Very exciting first date conversations.

But about 45 minutes into meeting... magic happened.

I can't for the life of me remember how it came up. But he brought up "blogs":

Him: Oh I love blogs. HA! No not really. I think blogs are so ridiculous. I once saw a guy wearing a shirt, "No one cares about your stupid blog." I really need that shirt. So great because no one does care about stupid blogs. What about you?

Me: I have 5 blogs.

Him: Oh.

Awkward pause

Him: Is it just your mom and friends that read them?

That probably tops as one of my favorite first date conversations ever. It carried me through the rest of the night with the blind date, in conversations with my sister and girlfriends later that night and onto the next day with my coworkers.

He's probably reading this now... so, yes I do blog and you even made a post!

What a crazy weekend. In the nearly two years that I lived in Portland, I don't know if I had one that was as busy and as fun as this past one.

I had the opportunity of playing in the closets of four beautiful women (and friends), spend time with my family and eat far too much, get drinks with girl friends, old friends and new friends too, and of course, cuddle all night with my big-boned doxie.

I couldn't have asked for a better weekend but perhaps a bit more sleep.

I don't know when I will be able to spend the weekend in Portland again but that doesn't mean Portland can't come visit me.

I hit a wall last week.

At first the snow was fun. I was spending more time with my flatmate and neighbors, working from home, and not feeling stress from work. But then it all set in.

Suddenly my remote desktop became unbearable and the isolation of being stuck on top of my hill was too much.

So I did the only thing I knew to do... I dressed in protest.

Shorts.

It was still freezing rain so I paired the shorts with leopard tights but I was sticking it to the Man... Snow Man, the only way I could.

I repeated my protest the next day but leveled out a bit by leaving the leopard tights at home and donning a black pair instead.

I'm pretty sure Occupy Wall St. would be impressed my bold and tenacious approach...

Or something like that.

Bitterroot promised to open their doors last week come snow or freezing rain and they did not disappoint. Just three days after opening, we were lucky to snag a table for 11 to celebrate Vik's 30th Birthday.

Our service was amazingly friendly, the drinks were delicious and the BBQ was great too. But the real winner? Pulled Pork Nachos.... the next morning after this meal I woke up still full and craving nachos.

In fact, I enjoyed myself so much that I am coming back tonight bringing a different group of friends.

It may only be the early days, but having only been opened for 3 days I see nothing but promise in Bitterroot's future.

Flowers

Work was as usual yesterday. The snow storm had passed and there was no longer an excuse to not make it into the office. My day was nearing it's end and I realized I still hadn't finished my morning coffee and yet continued to drink it after 6 hours. That's how eventful and exciting my Monday was.

A call came in on my cell phone and I answered in hopes of a distraction.

"Hi this is KC's Flower Shop. We have a delivery for you that was requested to arrive before 3pm but we have the wrong address. We have talked to your human resources and found your correct location unfortunately we won't make it by 3pm. If we arrive a little later, will we miss you?"

Say what?

I told them that after 3pm would not be an issue as I was not expecting or waiting for a delivery. They apologized for ruining the surprise and I quickly told them it was not a problem, I am still delighted.

From 2:45 pm until around 3:20pm, I could not think straight at all.

Who had sent the flowers?

I was ready to start calling every little boyfriend to find out if it had been them but then I remembered a conversation I had earlier on GTalk. It was a casual conversation about what floor I work on..

D: You're on the 7th floor right?

Me: 17th.

D: curious. I couldn't remember.

Me: Are you here?!!! I don't believe in "just curious."

D: No I was just thinking about how I had a meeting on the 15th floor

Earlier in the day, I didn't think anything of this conversation but as I was counting down the seconds to receive my package it all came back to me.

Soon my receptionist called to say I had a package on the 10th floor and before long it was on my table.

The delivery was beautiful roses, red balloons (my favorite) and a note... wishing that this would be a bright start to my week.

Perfect.

It is so amazing to have a friend so thoughtful. I am blown away by his kindness.

I immediately called my mother. [I take that back, I immediately pulled out my ginormous camera and took pictures.] She was just as excited as I was.

As I sat at my desk, a bit flustered, telling her about them and the note, I lowered my voice and whispered

These are my first flowers.

It's true. I've received balloons, poems, love notes, songs and an extremely awkward and uncomfortable private serenade but never has a guy sent me flowers.

Take note, Gentleman... I can now honestly say, this goes a long way.

Under Siege

Just when I thought the storm was ending, a new one rolled in that blanketed the entire city with snow. I live on top of a huge hill in Seattle and we were instantly trapped. All roads leading down may have been closed but thankfully the stores on top were open for business.

We ventured out early morning and stopped into Bartell's to talk with their employees, we had apparently just missed a mad dash to buy sleds. The streets were eerily quiet but within 30 minutes, it was as if all adults had a sip of snow-day-kool-aid and play began to ensue.

Run, Girl.

I learned long ago that the only way to learn to love to run is to create a power playlist.

Today is day 21 of 2012 and I'm going semi strong on my new years resolution. I've ran every day... besides a few that required a power walk instead... And one very sad day where the snow took over not only the city, but my gym too.

Some days I run fast, other days I run longer, and about once a week I have a run so terrible that I don't think I can go on.

However each good day and bad is made possible by my playlist. It runs about 24 minutes with both a warm up/slow run (Sweet Disposition) and cool down (We are Young).

My "power song" is DJ Scene's mashup of Hey Mickey and a Black Eyed Peas song. (Must listen >>; )

Then by the time 99 Problems mash up comes on, I am typically over running and this song helps push me as I round the final loop back to the start line.

The hardest part of the run is putting on my running shoes. As soon as I hit the pavement and for the rest of the day that follows, I am on my runner's high.

Second day of Seattle snow and a little bit of play. The snow was perfect snow ball snow. Dry, easy to pack, and with Northface down jacket and gloves... warm!

Fur-nephew, Rudy, is still unsure how he feels about snow. He wants to constantly be outside but then can only handle a few minutes. The solution was to wrap him in his thunder jacket and baby bjorn him around the block. Totally normal.

When I first decided I was moving to Seattle, I was beyond heartbroken but a job opportunity was available that I couldn't pass up. Although I will admit, even up to the week I was moving, I met with potential companies in Portland. As much as I wanted to stay, none of those opportunities could top what was waiting for me in Seattle.

I lived in Portland for a little over a year and a half and for the first year, I wasn't sold on the city. But six months before I left everything changed. I became captivated by Portland for many reasons I won't name here. It was those same reasons that had me never wanting to leave.

Alas, I moved.

I have lived in Seattle for three and a half months. I have made great friends, my work is appreciated, I love the area I live and the excitement of a new city.

Like I told you yesterday, we had our first snow storm this weekend and after barricading myself in the house, I walked to get coffee.

I was bundled up in my warmest jacket, snow shoes on my feet, and snow sticking to my hair.

The powder that covered the streets and sidewalks made my neighborhood even more lovely. It reminded me about everything that I have here.

As I breathed in the fresh dry smell of the first snow, my heart began to flutter. Without realizing it, I was being swept away by a city who I didn't think I wanted to be with.

It was during that walk, I realized that I was finally starting a new chapter in my life...

And for the romantics...

I was falling in love.

For those not in the Pacific Northwest, we finally had our first touch of snow. For having a pretty terrible summer, we have had a fantastic winter. (In my humble yet expert opinion.) It has been relatively warm and fairly dry. Especially for the NW. But word came a week ago that snow was to hit on Sunday and the weather did not disappoint.

As great as the snow is, coming home to a fireplace, cup of hot chocolate and a movie may be the best thing ever.

I had just finished having a late dinner with Megan and we started watching a movie on Netflix. Megan received a text from some college friends to join them bowling and as I was still in my workout clothes from a 10am session, I declined.

I curled up on the couch with my comfiest blanket only to realize 20 minutes after she left that a hot shower and reading a book in bed is how I wanted to spend the rest of my evening.

I turned off the tv and all of the lights and I locked the front door.

I set my iPhone to play my "E" playlist and soon relaxed in the heat of hot water. Once the water was turned off and I was wrapped in my towel I heard noises. We live on a busy street so I assumed it was the typical foot traffic.

I turned off the lights in my bathroom and headed straight to my bedroom leaving the bathroom cracked to let the steam out. I put my iphone on my bed and suddenly realized the noises were too loud to be outside.

I tiptoed into my dark house with my towel wrapped tightly trying to see if Megan was home. Instead I saw the tv on and an empty living room.

Megan?

It was just me.

I turned off the tv and walked back to my room.

As soon as I made it to my door, I heard the sound from the tv again.

I ran to the tv and once again with the remote, turned it off.

I sat there and waited.

It flickered on.

I pressed mute and this time ran to my room. I closed the door and grabbed my phone.

I called Ashley. They were finishing Vik's birthday dinner and told me to walk around the house to make sure no one was there. I hung up.

I called my parents.

By now I was in the corner of my room, still in just a towel... but sobbing.

As my parents stayed on the phone I put pajamas on then continued to huddle as far from the door as possible wishing I had a lock on my bedroom door.

They coaxed me out and had me turn on every light in the house then look in every conceivable place a person could hide.

With each door to look behind, I shook with fear and tears streaming down my face.

Closets. Under beds. Checking locks.

With the remote I turned the tv off again. And waited.

It flickered on.

With no hesitation, I went straight for the power cord on the tv and ripped it out of the socket. I turned off every light, crawled into bed, and talked to my mom until I calmed down.

My brother in law lives about a mile a way and I have a Marine living next door, none of that made me feel safe.

I've put myself in terrible situations before; walking alone when I shouldn't have, photographing events at 5am in the tenderloin of San Francisco, allowing a homeless man to walk me home at 2am in San Jose... I was never the cautious child in my family.

But the thought of something or someone in my home sent me over the edge.

My tough bravado went quickly out the door and I instantly became a little girl who only wanted her parents that were 200 miles away.

A little known fact about me: I enjoy cooking.

I truly do.

But I wouldn't consider it my favorite thing to do mostly because of the post cooking clean up.

On top of that, I am very attracted to a boyfriend that loves cooking. I have also had the privilege of dating a few gentleman who were very good at it, one was especially talented.

Instead I tell people I don't cook... then if I ever do, they are pleasantly surprised. Smart, right?

Friday is Forever

Happy Hour was planned the night before as something fun to do on Friday that wouldn't take all evening since we each had Saturday morning plans. It started at 4pm at Larado's after I was told by Megan and Elyse that is where "locals" go. I obviously jumped at the chance of being a local.

We finished at Larado's at around 7pm and didn't want to call it a night so instead opted to continue the evening in Ballard. Shelter became our second and final stop of the evening that didn't conclude until close to midnight.

As the night progressed at Shelter, the crowd turned from Seattle hipsters to popped collars and bleached hair. It was fantastically disgusting. I couldn't turn my eyes away.

From the moment I left work early until we parted at our apartment doors, I was laughing. These girls are so fun to be around and although they can't stand my camera, they are more than open to an adventure.

Cheers to whatever we may find next...Eh?

I couldn't have wished for a better NYE even if I tried. It involved eating way too much, poppy hipster music, strolling through downtown Ballard after midnight, fireworks with the fabulous neighbors, a movie till my eyelids were heavy, and enjoyable company for the entire time.

I am so excited for this new year. I love my new city, I am making lifetime friends, and I am continuing to challenge myself to help build stronger digital customer experiences for the right customer.

I am dogsitting my fur nephew for the week and spoiling him rotten.

He gets to sleep in bed with me, mind you, under the covers too, a little bit of extra food plus a new bone, and I even come home from work early.

Until yesterday.

All bets are off.

We have all heard the excuse. "My dog ate my.."

Yes, I am 26.
Yes, I wear my retainer religiously each night.
A few people find it adorable. (Most don't.)

But after having braces twice (once when I was an "adult") and jaw surgery once, I am obsessed with straight teeth.

Correction, I'm obsessed with teeth in general. Do you know anyone else that keeps a tooth brush in her car and office?

My orthodontist is in San Francisco and closed until next Tuesday. I am having near panic attacks that my teeth will go crooked by then. And I'm still slated to puppy sit until Monday. Will people please stop asking me to dog sit?

I am so disappointed by my lack of pictures from my Christmas weekend in Portland. As soon as I arrived I pulled my camera out, turned it on, and realized it wasn't juiced... Oh, and my charger was in Seattle.

Alas, the weekend was very memorable and spent with my immediate family, brother in law, and great friend, Shaya.

Some tears were cried... by the women folk over girly christmas movie.
Some blood was shed... we won't be talking about this. ;-)
Some cookies were eaten... and by some I mean a mass quantity.
And fun was had... by all.

Visits to Portland are getting tougher and tougher. I love being with my family and especially by dog which makes it heartbreaking to leave.

Only a few weeks before I moved to Seattle, I celebrated my friend Matt's birthday like this...

Now nearing the end of month three in my new home, I had a drop in visitor.

The stars aligned and I was able to join Matt and his daughter for lunch with thanks to a mini vacation, instagram, and working near all Seattle tourist stops.

I have been wanting to meet Morgan forever. From stories and pictures I've seen/heard I imagined a little fireball. I was not disappointed. Within minutes of warming her up I learned she is five and a half, has two boyfriends, and doesn't just walk... she runs, skips, bounces, and dances everywhere. A girl after my own heart.

I love parents who are raising their daughters to be independent, kind, and themselves. I have no doubt that Miss Morgan will grow up to be a confident woman... but Lord, help Matt for the next 15 years! I should maybe give him my parent's phone number in case he needs advice.

I was lucky enough to meet Sung Park early last month and finally hear him sing live at the Triple Door last week. He was beyond outstanding and sang with such soul and conviction.

I have never used the word "guru" before but my mom is a personality guru. It's fitting. She is kind of a rockstar when it comes to understanding human behavior and helping teams become successful through utilizing their differences.

I was forwarded a personality test and after answer a series of questions I thought "there is no way this has any sort of clue as to who I am." Then I got the results and was in awe.

Family Dinner

Every Sunday, Vik and Ashley host family dinner. It is possibly my favorite time of the week because they are both extraordinary cooks, I get major cuddle sessions with Rudy, and it is the only time I watch TV.

This week they didn't hold back with an over the top meal of roast beef, veggies, and mac & cheese. It left us all in a comatose state for hours after. Still... no regrets.

It's dinner and game night Top of Queen Anne with participants from both my place and the girls next door. I supplied the recipes, Megan cooked the food, and Elyse taught us a new card game. All was going smoothly until competition set it.

I faired well the first round and then got swept during both the second and the third. The true victor was Megan who came out of left field with her card game strategy of calling quickly and early.

Victory will one day be mine.

To celebrate my dear young dad's 30th birthday, we took him to Broder (SE Portland) for breakfast.

Broder serves the food of my people, Scandinavian, and does it in an intimate location. Food is plated with personality and ingredients top notch. I especially love their potato pancake and desperately want to try their lefsa.

Although my breakfast was great, celebrating dad was better. I feel so honored to be raised by such a man of integrity, intelligence, and passion.

And I insisted on a videographer. Mostly, I insisted on James Polits.

I've seen some of James work and was always impressed. But I knew James. I knew how he would kill himself to make it perfect.

We finally received the video last night and it is perfect.

A Full on Assault

On Saturday I woke up in the middle of the night and something wasn't right. I was dehydrated, could barely swallow, and felt like I had been punched in the face. After chugging two glasses of water I slipped back into bed.

By morning I had a full on assault on my sinus:
My head was pounding.
My throat was on fire.
I couldn't breath.
I couldn't hear.

I rolled out of bed, drove to the grocery, and quickly loaded a basket with dayquil, nyquil, and an assortment of vitamins.

My big weekend plans? Complete shot.

I spent the rest of the day in bed.
I spent the rest of the next day in bed.

I hoped by Monday, I would be better. It's just a cold, right?

Nope.

On Tuesday, a slight fever came on. A coworker literally begged me to go home.

Wednesday brought on a cough that kept me up all night into Thursday.

Plans were cancelled. Chairs scooted away from me. Everything became miserable.

All this to say... Sorry I haven't written.

I think I'm on the tail end of it all. And I am actually happy to have gotten it. It explains my exhaustion these past few weeks.

For now, I'm off to work and then driving down to Portland for the weekend.

I am so excited to be living in Seattle... not because I work for a great company, have a fantastic new home, or live a lifestyle that generally fits me, but because I get to be near my sister, Ashley, and her new husband, Vik, as they experience many firsts.

It's different than when you are dating...Although that first Christmas is exciting. But in truly sharing their lives (and home) it is a new experience. On this day we set out to find their tree and the perfect ornaments to decorate it with.

Unfortunately, they ditch me for the tree search. (Still bitter.)

I love board games. I love most games. But I especially love Fast Scrabble. (Perhaps you know it as Bananas.) I love the speed of the game and how it requires you to work smartly but be able to adjust. This past weekend I played a few rounds with the women of the Noah / Rajagopal houses and swept it.

Then the men got involved and I finally met my match.

Thankfully I lost twice to two of the most brilliant men I know. First to my dad and second to Ashley's father in law, Raj...but just barely.

I have 360 days of training and then a rematch.

Thanksgiving in Seattle

The closest I have ever come to camping was when I was younger and my family and I would take vacations in Lake Powell on my grandpa's houseboat. Even then, sleeping under the stars, I was still atop a floating house.

A few years back I was in Chicago and had drinks at Violet Hour, an unmarked speakeasy that specializes in amazing cocktails for those that can find it. This past weekend I went to Bathtub Gin & CO and it can definitely compete.

Bathtub Gin & CO is located in an alley between 1st and 2nd off of Blanchard. Instead of a yellow light like Violet Hour, it had a TOMs wearing Hipster to tell you you were at the right door. But it has equally amazing and strong drinks like Violet Hour.

I asked for the dealer's choice which upon talking to my server she knew what to bring me. I wish I knew exactly what was in it but it had a jalapeno infused tequila and a few other mixtures that created the most amazing pink spicy cocktail.

Cheers to great drinks, new friends, and exploring this new city.

A Seattle Visit

I have lived in Seattle for exactly one month and FINALLY had my first out of town visitor.

One of my treasured friends, Shaya, came up from Portland for a Saturday afternoon wedding and stopped in for an evening/morning to visit. I had so much fun with her and our trip visit was cut short a little early as she received a call at 6am on Saturday telling her her little sister was in the middle of labor! We quickly packed up her bag, grabbed breakfast at Macrina and then sent her back to Portland (unable to go to the wedding) to be there for her sister.

It was so fun having Shaya in town, even if only for 18 hours. It was a little taste of Portland which I've been really needing.

How To Ride The Bus

I have perfected the art of riding the bus.

It has taken me a long time.

A very long time.

When I lived in San Francisco, I sat next to a lady who wet herself while we shared a cloth bench. Another time, a young man asked me my name and then proceeded to pleasure himself outside of his pants.

I refuse to relive these horror stores. I won't be a victim.

Instead, I created a fool proof plan.

From the time the bus pulls up to the curb and you are seated, there is roughly a 30 second lapse of time. 20 of those seconds are spent paying for the bus. That means you have a 10 second scan and window of opportunity to pick your seat.

Pick wisely, friends.

Second One: Find all empty seats.

Second Two: Eliminate all empty seats that have the entire row empty (will explain later)

Second Three: Discard empty seat that is next to a cute boy. It will be the longest, most nerve racking commute of your life. Trust me, you are too shy to say "Hi!"

Second Four: Is someone talking on their phone? Forget that empty seat.

Second Five: Is someone reading a book or their cell phone? NAB THAT SEAT! They will not bother you the entire ride, are intelligent enough to read, and give you constant entertainment as you peak out of the corner of your eye at their Facebook.

Second Six through Ten: You are starting to panic. Don't worry. In these four seconds, gauge the remainder of the empty seats and choose whoever looks the cleanest and isn't using the empty seat as a bag holder (jerks).

Rookie Mistakes:

Never take a seat that has the row empty. NEVER DO THAT. Never. You lose all control because at the next stop Stinky McStinkerson or Chatty Cathy will be seated an inch from you.
The bus empties out leaving empty rows. You move over. Stop it! NEVER DO THAT. Again, next bus stop none other than Pervert Peebody will be itching for your number or just itching himself.
Sure, you may feel awkward holding down that seat. Your seat mate is probably irritated you didn't move too. But the bus is a gamble and staying in your seat is a safe bet.

Avoid:

People eating.
People who look like they didn't shower.
People who look like they showered in cologne.
Back of the bus.
Exceptionally old.
Exceptionally young.

Pro-Tip:

I know I told you to avoid the good looking guy but that doesn't mean ignore him all together. I recommend sitting the seat prior, kitty corner. Then, for those 20 glorious minutes he can witness how delightful you are. It may not happen today, it may not happen tomorrow... but something will happen eventually. (Just don't force it and smile. Always smile.)

I sat in a meeting a few weeks back where the 2011 Holiday guide was mentioned. I hadn't seen proofs yet or been there long enough to understand the concept so it seemed a bit silly.

Then I saw the proofs and finally the book and I fell in love.

I'm a mix between the Downtown Girl and Chic Comedienne and I can't decide if I am more in love with the Boyfriend or the Gentleman... but I'm leaning towards the Boyfriend.

I've started categorizing my friends and even picking out Christmas gifts. I just wish that we had more personalities to choose from!

I am a book collector and an avid reader. To me, they are treasured pieces... but only if I enjoyed the book.

I once spent a weekend hollowing out a book to create a secret compartment for a boyfriend.

I found an old version of a book he never stopped talking about on Amazon and spent an hour in Paper Source getting the right supplies. It took me a Sunday afternoon to cut out the inside and then a day to dry. I filled it with treats and finally shipped it off.

Who knows if this book still exists, but I considered it a success. (Gifts are also my love language so I'm totally biased!)

I'm never one to repeat a gift especially if they are from previous relationships. But I love the idea of doing something creative with books. Which is why, this may be my next project:

If I fall on my face today it is all my sister's fault. She convinced me that I needed 5" heels.

I stand at nearly 5'3" but today I reach 5'8". It's amazing what you can see at this height: the tops of heads... what the girl in the quad next to me is eating... Japan.

I have roughly six more hours of work, a short play date with Jake, and, finally, book club. For these next 12 hours I am fervently praying that I don't fall. It will be a long way down.

I had jaw surgery four years ago and I still have not gotten use to my "new" face. It wasn't a severe change but as someone who lived with a certain look for decades (just two), having something different was...different! It's not that I don't like how I look now, I sometimes wonder if it was better before.

Regardless.

I was complaining.

No one likes to listen to me complain.

They assume it's all smiles and bubblegum 24/7.

Thankfully I was with some creative types who told me to lock it up and took my picture.

And now I can't decide which picture I like best.

I love going on long walks. I am not a power walker by any means...but instead prefer a brisk pace (for my short legs) for extended periods of time.

This past Saturday I walked from Queen Anne to Fremont and back. A little less than 5 miles; hills both ways. When I told my flatmate what I was doing her response was, "You know you have to walk back up that hill?"

To be perfectly honest, the hill wasn't as daunting as I was previously warned. It doesn't hurt that the weather was perfect, my music gave me a great pace and my spirits were high.

[I was also instagramming for all 5 miles... so my pace was a little less brisk and a little more picturesque.]

I may have also stopped to do a little window shopping... and by window shopping I mean actual shopping.

I am terrible about talking about myself. It may be hard to believe since I have multiple blogs, twitters, and social streams where all I do all day long is talk. But in general, most of my conversations revolve around the other person.

I love people. I love getting to know someone and really caring about who they are.

I hate telling people about me. I am far too private. If I am talking about myself I try to make it into a joke.

Which is why, when someone sees me or sees things that I don't blatantly parade, I am delighted.
I dated someone earlier this year. It was never serious, just off and on when both of our busy schedules would allow. But I will never forget our first date.

I am ice chewer. It is a habit that I barely notice I do but I eat ice like it is your favorite chip. Most often I will get large glasses of ice and chew all day. I have no plans to break this bad habit despite how annoying it may be to those around me. I just love it too much.

Back to the first date...

We were meeting at a cozy restaurant in Portland. Candlelight, fireplace, charming service... a perfect first date spot. I remember he was wearing a sportscoat and waiting at the bar when I arrived. I was so nervous. We started with drinks and conversation quickly got in the way of ordering dinner. As the evening progressed and my date ordered another drink, I was content with what I was drinking:

"I'll have another and can I get a glass of ice for her."

Thinking about that still makes me smile. I don't recall having a conversation about chewing ice. It may be silly to be delighted by that gesture but it had shown me more than an evening of conversation could ever say.

Fast forward half of a year and I am moving from Portland to Seattle. We had not kept in touch. In fact, we had a pretty terrible falling out months prior. But here and there, little moments of reconnection... Texts on birthdays. Running into each other in a different state. Casual twitter conversations. Then when he heard I was moving, he rearranged his schedule so we could have dinner together before I moved.

This time we met at his place then made a few different stops for drinks and dinner. The places weren't as cozy as before but I was still nervous. We never talked about our falling out. We didn't need to. We caught up on all that had gone on in the past 6 months... family, work, relationships and everything in between. During dinner, the ice had melted from his scotch and he asked our server for some more. Once the ice arrived, he poured half into his drink and set the glass in the middle of the table. We continued talking and planning what the rest of our evening may hold. It was my last night in Portland, I was hoping to make it memorable. Then he said,

"I am surprised you haven't eaten that ice. I saved half of it for you."

Tonight, Tonight

I once tweeted that every time I hear the song "Tonight, Tonight" by Hot Chelle Rae I can't help but shake it. That may have been months ago but it is still true to this day, regardless how overplayed the song is. In fact, it has become a joke between my sister and I because of my dorky dance that I MUST do, no matter where I am.
At Ashley's wedding that was the one song I was hoping for but as people continued requesting songs and the DJ seemed to be a fan of dance music, I gave up hope. With only a few songs left, Ashley grabbed me from my water break underneath the twinkle lights outside because she wanted to dance. One of her other bridesmaids had just excitedly told us she requested "Sex on Fire" and as we walked back to the dance floor my mind was racing with why the heck would someone request that song, let alone be able to dance to it.

As we hit the dance floor and the previous song finished, "Tonight, Tonight" came on. Ashley was delighted with herself at surprising me and I was swept in emotion by the silly thoughtfulness of my sister.

Then the dance floor cleared. Apparently I am the only one that likes this song.

It was LITERALLY just me and Ashley having a dance off party, a scene that is pretty typical of our hangouts. Except this time we just happened to be surrounded by 100 friends and family. And they were watching.

I will never forget those four minutes.

These past two weeks have been a whirlwind.
I left my previous job.

Moved to Seattle.

And turned a year older.

[Majority of that happening in the last 4 days alone.]

But in all the madness, I took an evening off to celebrate my move to Seattle and turning 26.

We ate dinner at Poppy in Capitol Hill and then had frozen yogurt at Munchies in Queen Anne. Frozen yogurt was good but it was dinner at Poppy's that made the evening. Dinner was a fusion of Northern Indian plating (thalia) with American cuisine. The ingrediates were fresh and of great quality and the small plate portion made each flavor and dish unique.

A Toast: To Ashley and Vik

For those that do not know me, I am Danielle or often called Dani. I am Ashley’s little sister and tomorrow I will be her Maid of Honor.

I am so excited to be here today to celebrate Ashley and Vik and I want to thank Ray and Linda and Raj and Joy for inviting us all here this weekend.

I knew it was my responsibility as Maid of Honor to give a toast. But as Ashley’s little sister I for sure thought she would find a way to get me out of it.

Instead I was given a list of stories not to mention, words not to say, videos not to show and pictures to hide forever. That is probably best.

Ashley was always the perfect child. Her hair was long and brushed. Her clothes ironed. She had straight A’s and was a top athlete. While I spent my days grounded, Ashley excelled at everything she set her mind too. From as long as I can remember, all of my guy friends were in love with my sister. I often said, “Until Ashley got married, I will never have a boyfriend.” I guess that means tomorrow is a big day for me too…

But in all seriousness, there has never been anyone I looked up to more than her.

Even at a young age, Ashley had a “type”.

At first it was Joey McEntyre from New Kids on the Block.

Then it was Prince William.

Finally, the always injured A’s baseball player, Mark Mulder. Yes, Ashley, you guys totally had a moment.

And now it is Vik.

Vik is the perfect man because he combines her lifetime of love interests.

He has the boy band tattoo like Joey McEntyre.

The charm of a future king of England.

And the athleticism of an always-injured athlete.

But in truth: he is loyal, steady, compassionate, and kind. Everything Ashley always wanted.

Growing up, I may have been the little sister but I always took care of Ashley. I was dubbed her little pit bull. If there was anything she needed, I would do it. I got her ketchup at McDonalds. I scared off boyfriends. I threatened to beat up anyone that looked at her wrong. But also, we could laugh for hours at the silliest things, every movie ended with a dance off party, and we could talk all night long just sharing our dreams.

Vik, Ashley is the only sister I have. She is my heart. I will never give up our end of movie dance offs but I will cut back the all night talks if you promise to take care of her.

As you both take this next journey together I pray for abundant happiness and blessings for you.

Travel is very important to me and I have made it a priority in my life. I believe my life is richer because of the places I have been too... It has become a way of life, a lifestyle choice.

Seattle Spotlight: Muse Coffee CO

Just a few blocks from Ashley and Vik's house sits Muse Coffee Co, a cute and welcoming coffeeshop. The staff is so welcoming and friendly that during a long weekend in Seattle I went every day and felt, by Monday, I had made new friends!

A Wedding Slideshow: To Ashley and Vik

One of my maid of honor duties for my sister's wedding was to create their slideshow that will be shown at both the rehearsal dinner and wedding. I looked for easy solutions online and found a few websites that allowed me to pop some pictures in and pick a song. Even, iPhoto had an easy to use slideshow program.

But I am controlling.

Wait, you didn't know that?

Oops, surprise! I am!

I am also a borderline perfectionist. I blame my family for that.

And instead of plopping in some photos and picking a song, I went the Adobe Premier Pro & iMovie route and created a movie. This way I can time each image down to the millisecond, cut the songs exactly how I want them and add in photoshop files I created to add to the story.

Once the wedding party had throroughly baked outside from practicing for Ashley and Vik's big day, we hopped into our shuttle, drove back to downtown Portland and enjoyed rehearsal dinner at Andina with a LARGE group of family reaching into the 70s.

It was really the first chance to get to know Vik's family, most traveling very far, and even seeing much of our extended family for the first time in a long time.

The food was amazing.

The speeches were long... I tried to cut it down!

And the room was crowded.

A perfect start to create a story of a weekend.

Woodinville Wine Tour

You remember that weekend trip to Seattle a little bit ago? You know... the one where I had an interview and then stayed for some weekend fun? Oh, didn't tell you about the interview, huh?

I know. Secrets don't make friends. More on that later.

The weekend of fun ended with wine tasting in Woodinville with Ashley, Vik, and their Seattle / Kellogg business school friends. (Soon to be my Seattle / Kellogg business school friends.)

Let me tell you... it was fun. Lucky for you, I had a bajillion cameras... okay, 3: flip, canon, iphone. I like to have options!

Practice Makes Perfect

If I had my wish... Ashley's wedding would have been a less awkward and british version of this. (More like more awkward!) But of course, that was not an option. Which is why we spent a blazing hot afternoon in the sun to practice Ashley and Vik's special day.

Little Miss Ava was the perfect flower girl.

The person walking me down the aisle was 6'7. I am 5'3 on a good day which means I found the highest heels I could possibly walk in.... only to find out, I was walking down grass... by myself! So I practiced.

The good looking half of the bridal party... Also known as, the half of the bridal party 6'0 and under.

Best part: we had pier jumpers who promised not to show up the next day. Although it looked super fun!

We only ran through the dress rehearsal twice although in retrospect, we probably should have done it a few more times. Seeing as we almost forgot the groom the next day!

But it was a good practice for withstanding the blazing heat and records highs that met us the next day.

Eat, Drink, and Belly Ache

My weekend in a nutshell would best be described as: Eat, Drink, and Belly Ache

I took a long weekend off from work and drove up to Seattle to spend time with my sister and brother in law. We had Bumbershoot on the calendar but I was also warned that Ashley had a weekend booked full of adventure.

On Friday I was on my own for the day time which meant an early morning walk, a bit of exploring Queen Anne and Seattle, being ragged on on Facebook and Instagram for being a hipster, discovering a new coffee shop and then hanging out on Amazon.com campus waiting for Vik and Ashley to finish work. Post work, we literally ate and drank till late in the evening. First stop was Tavern Law for drinks and appetizers. This bar reminded me of a brighter Violet Hour (Chicago) and even had a secret door / upstairs room for the truly special. Afterwards we had dinner and wine at Sitka and Spruce. From 5pm until 11pm, every dish and drink I had was absolutely amazing. I am still stuffed just thinking about it.

On Saturday, naturally, I was the first to rise and shine. But being an early riser allowed for a quiet morning walk and excellent cup of coffee. Then my day took off with watching boats in the harbor, college football, and Bumbershoot, Seattle's yearly outdoor music/art festival.

Finally, Sunday didn't allow for any rest with an amazing breakfast by Vik then straight into wine tasting with a limo bus of friends and far too many wineries.

This weekend was perfect in every way.
